July Is History, but He's Still in Control

At midnight tonight, July 2026 will be history. In only two or three weeks, kids will be dragging, or skipping, according to their outlook, off to school again.

My! Where has the summer gone?!

On the bright side, it's National Mutt Day. Most of the dogs we had when I was a kid were pure-bred Spitz, but there was always a litter or two of mutts.

But in many ways mutts are the best. No highfalutin pretensions. What you saw was what you got. They loved us (provided we kept them fed and played with them), and we loved them just as much as the pure-bred ones. And we mourned them when they learned (alas, too late) not to chase cars.

S.S. Kresge, founder of Kmart was born on this day, as were Fred Quimby (producer of the Tom and Jerry show that we loved so much as kids) and Milton Friedman (Nobel Prize-winning economist and author of such books as Capitalism and Freedom and Free to Choose).

On a sad note indeed, on this date in 1941, Hermann Goring, acting on instructions from Adolf Hitler, wrote to Reinhard Heydrich, head of the dreaded Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the Nazi Security Service, "[S]ubmit to me as soon as possible a general plan of the administrative material and financial measures necessary for carrying out the desired final solution of the Jewish question." He was only too eager to comply with this order.

According to the original plan formulated in early 1939, the best solution was "emigration and evacuation," but that proved too slow and soon led to more extreme measures, the attempted "mass, systematic extermination" of all Jews in German-occupied areas, an effort known today as the Holocaust.

An estimated six million Jews, about two-thirds of all Jews living in Europe at the time, fell victim to this demonic effort. But the Jews were not wiped out because they are God's chosen people, and He promised to preserve them a people. He also promised to bless those who bless Israel and to curse those who curse Israel (Gen. 12:3). Instead, the purported thousand-year Third Reich and its major Nazi leaders were crushed, having lasted only twelve years. Moreover, between seven and nine million Germans were killed during World War II. The Jews are still here and always will be.

The world seems even crazier now than it was then, with antisemitism on the rise and would-be dictators, both political and religious, threatening freedoms everywhere. But just a reminder: the term "Democrat Socialist" is to communists what "National Socialist" was to the Nazis. And we have many such people running for office today and, saddest of all, getting votes from people who don't know history. And you know what happens to those who don't learn from history.

Underlying it all, however, is the sad fact that most children today aren't even being taught our history. They should be. They must be if we are to survive as a nation. And after they learn their history, they should read Friedman's books! Together, that might go far toward ending the threats to our freedoms from those who would be our masters.

Yet, even this shall pass away, just as has July this year--because God is still in control.
