Yes, I know that it isn't yet Thanksgiving, but Christmas really is just around the corner. Have you purchased all of your gifts yet? Are you struggling to think of what to get for those last few people on your list? Have you considered the sheer volume of gift buying that will soon inundate the postal service and all the other delivery companies, possibly delaying receipt of your purchases?
May I suggest that you consider giving the people on your list a book and to make that purchase before the rush begins? May I also be so bold and shameless as to suggest that that book be one of mine?
For the person on your list who likes to be the first in his or her circle of friends to have the latest, perhaps a copy of Legislating for the Confederacy: The Confederate Congress, which is my most recent work, would fit the bill. It analyzes the composition of the Congress, surveys the biographies of some of the major movers and shakers in it, and discusses the major issues with which that body tried to deal in its futile attempt to create for the South an independent nation.
Or, for someone interested in World War II, a copy of Dillon's War might be a good choice. It tells of one man's experiences in that conflict as he drove artillery forward observers of the famed Spearhead 3rd Armored Division into the most dangerous areas of the front lines to do their jobs, hastening the downfall of the Third Reich.
Or perhaps one of my other books would please those for whom you're buying: Confederate Cabinet Departments and Secretaries, Christ in Camp and Combat: Religious Work in the Confederate Armies, Evangelism and Expulsion: Missionary Work Among the Cherokees Until Removal, Look Unto the Hills: Stories of Growing Up in Rural East Tennessee, COMBAT! Lessons on Spiritual Warfare from Military History, and Teacher: Essays in Christian Education.
Because the publisher of several of these titles has gone out of business, three of those books might not be available even on Amazon much longer, so don't delay if you'd like one of them.
Unlike a box of chocolates or an ugly Christmas sweater, a book is a gift that can be enjoyed over a period of time. Why not consider a book for some of those last-minute purchases you're going to make?
